Chemotherapy/Radiation and Hair Loss

Cancer is a condition of uncontrolled cell growth, chemotherapy aims at reducing or stopping this abnormal cell growth. Anticancer drugs act on both normal cells and cancerous cells. Some normal cells such as hair follicles-also divide rapidly, which is why they are affected by chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy is the use of high-energy rays to stop cancer cells from growing ad multiplying. Radiation destroys the ability of cells within its reach –cancerous or normal- to grow and reproduce. However, cancer cells are more sensitive to radiation then normal cells. You may temporarily lose some of or all of your hair in the area being treated. In most cases your hair will start growing again after your treatment.
